Fayette, Iowa - Lewis University head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles knew that Upper Iowa would be a difficult opponent and coupled with other external factors, an even tougher one.
All proved true, but it was a Lewis own goal in the 80th minute that was the difference as the host Peacocks claimed the 1-0 non-conference regional victory over the visiting Flyers at Pattison Field on Sunday (Sept. 6) afternoon.
With the loss, Lewis falls to 0-2 on the campaign, while Upper Iowa improves to 2-0 overall.
"It was a tough road loss against a very good team after a late night game on Friday, a long bus ride on Saturday and playing an early game in the heat," Fiffles said. "We, however, need to learn how to win these games under those conditions.
"We need to be ready for conference play," Fiffles continued. "Saginaw Valley State and Upper Iowa are tournament quality teams and we had a bad break today to not come away with a draw on the road.
"Most importantly, we did things better and will continue to improve to get ready for Indianapolis."Â
Upper Iowa outshot the Flyers, 11-8, while Lewis edged the Peacocks in shots on goal, 5-4.
Upper Iowa goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt made five saves to pick up the shutout, while Lewis netminder
Justin Salazar (Elburn, Ill./Hinckley Big Rock) stopped three shots.
The Flyers return to action on Friday (Sept. 11), as they welcome Indianapolis to Lewis Stadium for their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. First kick for 'Youth Night' is slated for 7:30 PM.Â
