ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Buzzer beaters aren't just for basketball. A goal by junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) with 13 seconds remaining gave Lewis women's soccer a 1-0 season opening victory over Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Sept. 4) evening at Lewis Stadium.

Senior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) made a run out wide to the keeper's right. Moran played the ball back in front of the goal and found Carmody on a sliding shot to the right side of the net. Moran's effort earned her an assist on the tally.

Redshirt sophomore goaltender Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) recorded eight saves for the shutout victory.

"I'm very happy for the team," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "We talked about attitude before the game and I think you saw that in the final moments. They worked extremely hard and I couldn't be happier with the result."

Lewis improves to 1-0-0. Saginaw Valley State falls to 0-1-0. Lewis continues play on Sunday at noon when Alderson Broaddus comes to Lewis Stadium for a non-conference match.
