St. Louis, Mo. - The Lewis University men's basketball team shot, rebounded and defended its way to the 71-58 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over Maryville University at Maloney Arena on Thursday (Jan. 14) night.
The Flyers shot 54.5% (30-for-55) from the field and 45.0% (9-for-20) from three-point range, while Maryville was 40.0% (24-for-60) from the floor and 28.6% (8-for-28) from beyond the arc. Lewis also outrebounded Maryville, 40-25, including a 32-19 advantage on the defensive glass.
Lewis junior guard
Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and sophomore forward
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) each scored 14 points to lead the Flyer offense. Simelton knocked down two three-pointers and finished with a game-high six assists, while Strus grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Freshman center
Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while classmate
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
"We played really well (tonight)," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "It really helped having Miles (Simelton) back in the line-up.
"We did a good job of sharing the ball and I thought we played some really solid defense."
With the win, Lewis improves to 11-4 on the season and 3-2 in GLVC action, while the host Saints fall to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Maryville redshirt sophomore guard Forrester Sims topped the Saints with a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers. Fellow redshirt sophomore Marvin Grant-Clark added 19 points and three trifectas in the loss for Maryville.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 16), as they take on Missouri-St. Louis for a 3 PM GLVC showdown.
