Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) scored a career-high 32 points as she helped No. 8 Lewis women's hoops rally for a 69-52 win at Maryville on Thursday (Jan. 14) evening at Malone Arena in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
The Flyers trailed 25-19 in the second quarter before cutting the deficit to one point at halftime.
"Maryville did a great job in the first half on the defensive end," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "We were limited with foul trouble but kept it close in the first half."
Freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North)'s quick two fouls kept her on the bench for most of the first half, slowing down Lewis' offense.
But the second half was a different story. Lewis never trailed after Brawner-Henley scored the first points of the half on a layup to put Lewis up 33-32. Kelliher scored all 13 of her points in the final 20 minutes as Lewis out-scored Maryville 38-20 in the second.
"We did a much better job of attacking the zone and getting out in transition in the second half," Gillespie said. "Mariyah gave us another outstanding performance on both ends."
The Saints were 4-of-7 in the first half from beyond the arc. In the second half, Lewis limited Maryville to 0-of-7 from long range.
For the game, Lewis shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57). Maryville shot 29.1 percent (16-of-55).
Freshman
Kayla Brewer (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee School of Languages) pitched in 10 points.
Lewis improves to 15-1 (6-0 GLVC). Maryville falls to 8-5 (2-4 GLVC). Lewis is at Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (Jan. 16) in a 1 p.m. start.
