PDF BoxROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 9 Lewis women's basketball used a 19-9 edge in bench points to rally for a 70-58 victory over Missouri S&T on Saturday (Jan. 9) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.
The Flyers trailed for the majority of the first 25 minutes before a game changing 12-0 run by Lewis over the final four minutes of the third quarter. Junior
Alex Poole (Milwaukee, Wis./Menomonee Falls) had six points in the push. Senior
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) had a transition 3-pointer at the top of the arc to put Lewis up 47-41 at the 2:30 mark to force a Missouri S&T timeout.
Lewis limited Missouri S&T to only eight baskets in the second half to help complete the comeback. Sophomore
Tiana Karopulos (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished with 13 points, 11 came in the second half. It was Karopulos' second game after returning from an injury on Thursday.
"I'm so proud of her," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "She really doesn't care if she scores. If you tell her to just rebound, she'll just rebound. She plays the hardest she can every possession."
Brawner-Henley had her second straight game of 20 rebounds, recording 13 points with 20 boards and three blocks. It is her 62
nd career double-double. She passes Lillian McGill from Dist. Columbia 2008-11 for third all-time in NCAA DII history for career double-doubles.
She helped Lewis out-rebound the Lady Miners 44-27.
Freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led all scorers with 17 points.
Lewis finished 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor. Missouri S&T shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59).
Lewis improves to 14-1 (5-0 GLVC). Missouri S&T falls to 5-7 (1-4 GLVC).
