Grand Rapids, Mich. - Behind the strength of two wins apiece from seniors
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora),
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) and sophomore
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577), the Lewis University women's tennis team claimed the 6-3 non-conference win over Aquinas College in the Flyers' spring opener on Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon at the MVP Sports Complex.
With the win, Lewis improves to 1-0, while the Saints drop to 1-2 on the campaign.
Nguyen and Wetmore paired up for the 8-2 win over Aquinas' Marjeanne Bothma and Anna Musienko at No. 2 doubles. Nguyen also blanked Bothma, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Wetmore dished out a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Musienko at No. 4 singles.
Mindiyarova paired up with sophomore Dora Andrejzski at No. 1 doubles to pick up the 8-5 win over Aquinas' Lea Jansen and Martina Devetak. She would later drop Devetak, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
Lewis earned its final victory of the match at No. 5 singles, as freshman
Megan Conlin (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) defeated Brittany Mayer, 6-2, 6-1.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 21), as they head to Big Rapids, Mich., to meet Ferris State for a 1 PM ET showdown.
