Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team was unable to overcome 16 turnovers and 11 UW-Parkside three-pointers, as the No. 18 Rangers claimed the 85-77 victory over the Flyers in the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season finale at Neil Carey Arena on Thursday (Feb. 25) night.
UW-Parkside recorded 11 steals, led by four steals apiece from junior guard Alexander Brown and sophomore guard Kendale McCullum, and scored 23 points off of the Flyer miscues.
"When we have that many turnovers it makes it tough against a really good team (like Parkside)," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "You can't give a team like Parkside extra possessions, but you have to give them credit, because they are a very tough team to defend."
The Rangers also knocked down 47.8% (11-for-23) of their three-point attempts, led by three treys apiece from both Brown (19 points) and McCullum (15 points, 8 assists). UWP junior guard Jake Verhagen came off the bench and hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.
UWP leading scorer Andy Mazurczak collected 14 points and three assists, while freshman center Kyle Flanagan added 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
With the victory, UW-Parkside improves to 22-4 overall and 15-3 in GLVC action, while the Flyers fall to 20-8 on the campaign and 12-6 in conference play.
Lewis sophomore
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) notched his 11th double-double of the season with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard
Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) drained all four of his three-point attempts to finish with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting.
Flyer freshman guard
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
As a team, Lewis shot 50.0% (27-for-54) from both the field and three-point range (7-for-14), while the Rangers were 50.0% (30-for-60) from the field.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 28), as the fifth-seeded Flyers host a GLVC Tournament First Round contest against 12th-seeded Illinois Springfield. Tip-off is set for 3 PM at Neil Carey Arena.
