Springfield, Mo. - The Lewis University men's tennis team pulled off the 5-4 regional upset over No. 15 Drury University at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Friday (Feb. 26) night. The win marks the first time the Flyers have beaten the Panthers during head coach
Brett Bridel's tenure.
"Today we showed how the right mindset and great effort can help us overcome all the obstacles and end up with the victory," Bridel said. "It feels great to finally beat Drury."
With the win, Lewis improves to 3-1 on the campaign, while the host Panthers fall to 3-2 on the season.
Lewis freshmen
Alan Braschinsky (Tallinn, Estonia/Milna Harma) and
Anton Levitin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) each earned two victories for the Flyers on Friday night.
Braschinsky teamed up with junior
Mate Srdanovic (Split, Croatia/Graditeljsko-Geodetska Tehnicka) for the 8-3 triumph over Drury's Maximillian Happ and Kay Bartmann at No. 1 doubles. Braschinsky added a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 win over Drury's Sebastien Amato at No. 2 singles.
Levitin, along with teammate
Chandler Stimpert (Graceland, Ill./Morton), picked up the 8-3 win against Drury's Damien Minguez and Trevor Bachus at No. 3 doubles. Levitin would later defeat Bachus, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
Lewis' final victory came at No. 5 singles, as freshman
Brendan Peterson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dropped Minguez, 7-5, 6-0.
