Plainfield, Ill. – The Lewis University men's tennis team opened the spring campaign with a 7-2 regional victory over Hillsdale College on Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon at the Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill.
The Flyers completed the comeback victory against the Chargers, winning all six individual matchups after falling 2-1 in doubles play. With the win, the Flyers improve to 1-0 on the season, while Hillsdale falls to 0-1.
"We did not play well at No. 2 and 3 doubles, but we did have some guys step up in singles and get the job done," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "We may have won the match, but we need to be much better as a team."
Lewis' No. 1 doubles tandem of freshman
Alan Braschinsky (Tallinn, Estonia/Milna Harma) and sophomore
Mate Srdanovic (Split, Croatia/Graditeljsko-Geodetska Tehnicka) claimed an 8-1 victory over Hillsdale's Justin Hyman and Dugan Delp. Braschinsky also defeated Hyman at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-3), while Srdanovic dropped Delp at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-1).
At No. 3 singles, Lewis sophomore
Andre Norasith (Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) defeated Gianpiero Placidi, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.
Flyer freshman
Chandler Stimpert (Graceland, Ill./Morton) took down John Ciraci 7-6(5), 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore
Ransom Braaten (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) completed the 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 comeback victory for the Flyers against Zach Rabitoy at No. 5 singles.
Rounding out the singles sweep for Lewis was freshman
Brendan Peterson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) at No. 6 singles, with the 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Jerry Hewitt.
Lewis returns to action on February 20, as they head to Michigan for an 8 AM ET match with Aquinas.
