WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Lewis baseball dropped a non-conference contest to West Virginia Wesleyan 10-5 on Wednesday (March 2) morning.
West Virginia Wesleyan opened the scoring with a lone run in the top of the first. Lewis knotted it at one in the bottom half when sophomore
Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) scored on a wild pitch. It would stay tied at one until the fourth when the Bobcats put a three spot on the board. They added four more in the sixth to all but put the game away at 8-1.
Lewis' offense came alive in the eighth thanks to a four spot. Freshman
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) knocked in two runs in the inning. Sophomore
Sam Cybulski (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Lyons Township) and freshman
Zach Parker (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) also had a RBI in the frame.
"No doubt, we were thin on available arms today," Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said. "But sometimes you have to outscore teams and we failed to do that today. Two errors put us in an early hole and we can't make those kinds of mistakes and expect to win."
Post and junior
Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) each had two hits in the contest. Senior
Chris Pikoulas (Frankfort, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had a hit and a run scored.
Junior starter
Jake Herron (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) took the loss. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 7.0 innings of work. Riley Metz earned the win for West Virginia Wesleyan. He finished with 7.2 innings pitched and five runs allowed.
West Virginia Wesleyan moves to 3-4 with the win. The Flyers drop to 3-2. Lewis takes Thursday off before returning to the field on Friday for two games. The Flyers will play Tiffin at 12:30 p.m. ET and Ashland at 6 p.m. ET.
