PDF BoxWESTFIELD, Ind. – Lewis closed the Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase with a perfect 3-0 record after an 11-0 win over Alderson Broaddus on Sunday (March 20) morning. The game ended in the seventh inning when senior
Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) hit a three-run home run to invoke the 10-run rule.
The Flyers out-scored their three opponents 37-13 at the Crossover.
"Our starting pitchers did a great job getting deeper in games all weekend which was good to see," Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said.
Despite the offensive outburst on Sunday, Lewis' best performance came on the mound. Junior
Jake Herron (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) went all seven innings, giving up no runs, two hits and only two walks. He struck out seven. He earned eight fly outs and six ground outs. Herron retired 13 straight from the end of the first inning to the end of the fifth. His record moves to 2-1. Alderson Broaddus' starter Koby Overstreet took the loss, falling to 0-2.
"Jake pitched a great game today," McDonough said. "I'm happy for him that he was able to complete it and get the shutout."
The Flyers loaded the bases in the second and pushed across two runs. They opened it up the next inning with three more runs. Senior
Kurt Becker (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had a two-RBI single in the frame. Junior
Austin Schultz (Greensburg, Ind./Greensburg) doubled in Mastela for the Flyers' other run in the inning.
"Once again our hitters did a nice job getting to their pitcher early and getting into their bullpen," McDonough said. "We put a ton of guys on base and that leads to big innings. Mastela's home run was huge because has been right on the cusp of breaking loose."
The Flyers earned nine walks to go with their 11 hits. Lewis' 3-4-5 hitters of sophomore
Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates), Mastela and Becker combined for six hits, seven RBI, six runs scored and three walks.
Lewis improves to 10-5 with their sixth straight win. Alderson Broaddus falls to 7-8. Lewis returns to action on Friday (March 25) in the 2016 home opener for the Flyers. Friday's conference doubleheader against UW-Parkside will start at noon at Brennan Field.
