Somers, Wis. - After dropping a heartbreaking 10-7 decision to UW-Parkside in the completion of its halted game from March 29th, the Lewis University softball team responded with authority in a 13-4 (5 inn.) win over the Rangers in a non-conference contest at Case Complex on Wednesday (April 13) night.
Every Lewis player who batted, recorded at least one hit and the Flyers pounded out nine extra base hits, including home runs by sophomore designated player
Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and junior shortstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Cairo went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run, while Jaworski went 1-for-3 and recorded two runs and two RBI in the win.
Lewis outfielders
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) batted a combined 5-for-7 with six RBI and five runs scored. Nojiri was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, while Prieto was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, including a pair of RBI doubles.
Lewis freshman first baseman
Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) notched a two-run double, while senior second baseman
Frankie Castagna (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the victory.
With the win, Lewis improves to 16-26 on the campaign, while the host Rangers fall to 6-33 overall.
Lewis freshman pitcher
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) improved to 4-2 on the season, as she allowed four runs and seven hits, while fanning four batters. UW-Parkside starting pitcher Carly Dundee (4-17) took the loss for the Rangers, giving up six runs and seven hits in 1.1 innings of action.
After a two-week layoff, the halted game resumed in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at seven. UW-Parkside right fielder Courtney Ellingson led off the seventh with a double off of Lewis senior
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside). Brems (6-7) hit pinch hitter Raegan Fingerman, which brought catcher Alexis Simone to the plate.
Simone took a Brems offering over the left center field wall for a three-run homer, giving UW-Parkside the 10-7 Great Lakes Valley Conference win.
"It was a tough way to lose (the halted game), but it was nice to see us bounce back in the next game with our bats," Lewis head softball coach
Becky Pearl said.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday (April 16), as they welcome Rockhurst to the Lewis Softball Field for 'Senior Day'. First pitch of the GLVC twinbill is set for 12 PM.
