Louisville, Ky. – The Lewis University women's tennis team opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (April 2) afternoon with a 5-4 comeback victory over Bellarmine after earning four straight singles wins at the Eddie Weber Tennis Center.
"We got behind 2-1 after the doubles (play) but found a way to get four singles wins in very tough windy conditions to secure the team victory," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said.
With the win, the Flyers improve to 8-4 on the season and 1-0 in GLVC action, while the Knights fall to 6-7 on the campaign and 0-1 in conference play.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis sophomore
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) and senior
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) paired up for the 8-3 victory over Bellarmine's Mary Elaine Kuo and Nadia Sabie. Mindiyarova also earned a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash over Caitlin Hanley at No. 2 singles, while Wetmore sealed the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Sydney Thompson at No. 4 singles. Â Â
Flyer sophomore
Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) earned her seventh-straight singles victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Maggie Walroth 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Lewis senior
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) won 6-1, 6-1 over Sabie for her fifth-straight singles victory.
The Flyers return to action on Wednesday (April 6), as they travel to Bourbonnais, Ill. to face Olivet Nazarene. First serve is set for 3:30 PM.
