INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis baseball earned a split on Sunday (April 3) afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at No. 19 Indianapolis. The Flyers fell in game one 11-6 in a contest scheduled for seven innings. They bounced back in the nightcap for a 15-4 victory in a contest shortened to seven-innings due to the 10-run rule. Game two saw the Flyers blast six home runs.
Game One – UIndy 11, Lewis 6 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
The Flyers took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third but that is when the Greyhounds offense exploded for six runs. Lewis made it a game again in the top of the fifth, scoring twice, making the deficit 6-5. But three Indianapolis runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth all but ended Lewis' hopes of earning a win in game one.
Sophomore
Dalton Hottle (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) left the game in the fourth inning. He earned the loss to drop his record to 4-1. Of the six runs he gave up, three were unearned. Greyhounds starter Connor Mailloux allowed nine hits and five runs in 5.0 innings to get the win and move his record to 2-2.
Sophomore
Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka), senior
Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) and senior
Kurt Becker (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) each had two hits in game one for the Flyers.
Game Two – Lewis 15, UIndy 4 (7 innings) (HTML Box | PDF Box)
The Flyers took control of game two with an eight-run third inning. It came after Indianapolis tied the score at three in the bottom of the second. The big hit in the third was a grand slam by Tyrell. He also added a solo home run in the seventh.
Tyrell finished 3-of-5 with five RBI and three runs scored thanks to his two home runs and a double.
Junior
Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North), Mastela, Becker and sophomore
Sam Cybulski (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Lyons Township) also homered for the Flyers in the contest for a total of six long balls.
Junior
Alex Shake (Glasford, Ill./Canton) threw 6.0 innings. He allowed four runs with six strikeouts. He is now 3-1. Indianapolis starter Michael Schalasky is now 2-2. He went 2.1 innings in a losing effort.
"We talked about responding to adversity after game three and we did a nice job responding in game four," Lewis assistant coach
Mike Vucsko said. "I thought we swung the bats extremely well all weekend. Alex did a terrific job settling in and giving us a good start."
In the four-game series with Indianapolis, Lewis hit nine home runs.
Indianapolis is now 19-7 (6-2 GLVC). Lewis is 15-8 (5-3 GLVC). Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (April 6) in a non-conference contest at Grand Valley State. First pitch in Allendale, Michigan is set for 3 p.m. ET.
