Plainfield, Ill. - The Lewis University women's tennis team earned its fifth-straight win with a 5-1 upset victory over No. 27 University of Indianapolis at the Five Star Tennis Center on Saturday (April 9).
"It was a great collegiate tennis match," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "UIndy is one of the top programs in the region and we came out with great energy and prepared to compete.
"I'm so very proud of our effort today and this was a big team win."
With the victory, the Flyers improve to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in GLVC action, while the Greyhounds drop to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis' No. 6 ranked sophomore duo of
Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) and
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) earned the 8-5 victory over UIndy's Florence Renard and Hanna Volikova. Andrejszki added a 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2 victory over Volikova at No. 1 singles, while Mindiyarova collected the 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Renard at No. 2 singles.
The Flyer senior tandem of
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) and
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) downed UIndy's Allie Smith and Macey Spear 9-8 (3) at No. 2 doubles. Nguyen rounded out the team victory with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Smith at No. 3 singles.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday (April 10), as they host Saginaw Valley State for a regional matchup. First serve is set for 10 AM at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex in Romeoville, Ill.
