University Center, Mich. - The Lewis University women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit, but Saginaw Valley State scored late to earn the 3-2 regional victory over the visiting Flyers at Braddock Field on Saturday (Sept. 3) afternoon.
With the win, Saginaw Valley State improves to 2-0 on the campaign, while the Flyers fall to 1-1.
Saginaw Valley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Valentina Giambanco ('32) and Molly Vanderhoff ('37) in the first half.
The Flyers had momentum heading into the intermission as redshirt senior
Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) scored an unassisted goal at the 42:27 mark. Lewis evened it up in the 53rd minute, as freshman
Payton Emond (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove ) found the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-apiece.
Giambanco, however, had the final say as she scored the game-winner at the 74:21 mark for the Cardinals.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 6) for its home opener against Tiffin. First kick is slated for 2:30 PM.
