Maryville Claims 77-72 Win Over No. 19 Lewis Women's Basketball

Saints knock down 13 three-pointers in victory; Lewis' Kelliher breaks school-record with 18 baskets and finishes with 38 points.

Romeoville, Ill. - Despite a school-record 18 baskets and career-high 38 points from sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North), the No. 19 Lewis University women's basketball team was upset by Maryville University, 77-72, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Jan. 14) afternoon.

Kelliher was an amazing 18-for-19 from the field and hauled in seven rebounds in the loss. She broke the previous record of 17 field goals held by both Julie Fruendt (date unknown) and Darcee Schmidt (2/10/07). Her 38 points are the most by a Flyer since Schmidt scored 43 against Bellarmine on February 10, 2007.

Lewis redshirt senior guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Flyers.

With the win, Maryville improves to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in GLVC action, while the Flyers are now 13-4 on the campaign and 5-2 in conference play.

Maryville's three-point shooting proved to be the difference as the Saints knocked down 13 trifectas and shot 50.0% (13-for-26) from beyond the arc. Maryville guards Mary Burton (24 points, 7 treys) and Stephanie Sherwood (21 points, 3 treys) combined for 10 three-pointers and 45 points for the Saints.

As a team, the Saints shot 48.2% (27-for-56), while the Flyers shot 52.8% (28-for-53) from the field.

The Flyers turned the ball over 17 times, leading to 18 Maryville points.

Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 19), as the Flyers head to Louisville for a 5:30 PM showdown with No. 4 Bellarmine.
