Romeoville, Ill. - Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany/Raabeschule Braunschweig) scored with 1:13 left in double overtime to give the Lewis University men's soccer team a 4-3 win over Truman State Sunday (Oct. 22) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Lewis Stadium.
Mueller has scored the past four game-winning goals for the Flyers (11-4, 10-3 GLVC).
Truman took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a goal from Michael Ruzicka, with an assist from Matt Yankowitz.
Lewis tied the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute when Mueller found the back of the net on a pass from
Claude Kameni (Berlin, Germany/OSZ Gesundheit).
The Bulldogs (4-12-1, 3-10-1) answered in the 42nd minute when Mateo Montano scored on a header off a corner kick from Brian Kane.
Montano scored again in the 52nd minute on another header, this time off apass from Austin Morgan, to make it a 3-1 Truman lead.
Less than a minute later the Flyers answered when
Devon Amoo-Mensah (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) connected on a header off a free kick from
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) at the 35-yard line to cut the Flyer deficit to 3-2.
The Flyers tied the game at 3-3 in the 76th minute when Horstman scored on a penalty kick.
That set up the game-winning goal, when Mueller scored off a
Marty Manzke (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) corner kick to give Lewis its eighth win in the past nine games.
Lewis held a 40-6 shot advantage and had 13 corner kicks to two from Truman.
The Flyers conclude the regular season Wednesday (Oct. 25) when they play at Drury. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 PM.
