Joliet, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team went across town and defeated the University of St. Francis, the No. 7 ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II, 59-46 Tuesday (Dec. 5) in a nonconference game at the Sullivan Center.
The Flyers (6-3) jumped out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter and led 31-18 at the half. The Fighting Saints got to within five points at 36-31 midway through the third quarter before Lewis reclaimed a double-digit lead after three quarters (42-32).
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North)Â and
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) both had double doubles with 16 points and 11 rebounds and 15 points and 15 rebounds, respectively.
Chrissi Ekhomu (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic)Â totaled 10 points and
Kayla Brewer (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee School of Languages) added nine points for Lewis.
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) had an all-around game with five points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Lewis finished the game with a 42-32 rebounding advantage and had eight steals.
The Flyers went 18-of-47 (38.3%) from the floor, but hit 4-of-9 (44.4%) from three-point range.
St. Francis (7-3) was 17-of-54 (31.5%) from the floor.
Lewis returns home Thursday (Dec. 7) after four straight games on the road to take on Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Indianapolis. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
