Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 7 Lewis University men's volleyball team extended its home winning streak to seven matches with the 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association victory over Fort Wayne at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Feb. 18) night.
Lewis redshirt senior middle blocker
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) topped the Flyers with 11 kills, six blocks and finished with a hitting percentage of .412 (11 kills, 4 errors, 17 attacks).
With the win, Lewis improves to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in MIVA play while the Mastodons drop to 4-13 on the season and 1-5 in conference action.
Flyer sophomore setter
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) dished out 29 assists and registered a match-high four service aces, while redshirt sophomore
Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) collected 10 digs.
Lewis freshman outside hitter
Kyle Bugee (Los Altos, Calif./Homestead) and senior middle blocker
John Hodul (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) each tied Schmiegelt's match-high six blocks. Bugee (7 kills) hit .455 (7-2-11), while Hodul (5 kills) connected at a clip of .833 (5-0-6).
Those blocks played a key role in Lewis' win on Saturday, as they finished with 16 blocks to Fort Wayne's 6.5. Lewis also took advantage of several Mastodon errors, as Fort Wayne had 31 hitting errors along with 21 service errors.
Fort Wayne hit .120 (45-31-117) as a team, while Lewis finished with a hitting percentage of .194 (36-18-93).
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Feb. 24), as they take on local rival Loyola for a 7 PM start in Rogers Park.
