Quincy, Ill. - Despite allowing two earned runs in two games, the Lewis University softball team split its Great Lakes Valley Conference opening doubleheader, defeating Quincy University, 8-0 (6 inn.) in game one before dropping a 2-1 decision in the nightcap at the Mart Heinen Complex on Saturday (March 18).
With the split, Lewis moves to 12-7 on the campaign and 1-1 in GLVC action, while the host Hawks are now 6-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (March 19), as the Flyers head to Kirksville, Mo., for a 12 PM twinbill with Truman State.

Lewis sophomore pitcher
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) got it done both at the plate and in the circle, as the Crestwood, Ill., native went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI, while tossing her second consecutive complete-game shutout. Sanders (8-0) allowed five hits and struck out five batters in six innings of work.
Lewis seniors
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) combined for six hits, five runs and a RBI in the victory. Jaworski was 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while Nojiri was 3-for-4 with three runs and a RBI.
Flyer junior catcher
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was 2-for-3 at the dish with three runs and a run, including her team-best third home run of the season.
Lewis freshman third baseman
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the victory.

Lewis was unable to get to Quincy starting pitcher Meghan Quirk, as the Flyers stranded 12 runners on base, including eight in scoring position.

Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) was the tough luck loser for the Flyers. Schweicker (2-2) went the distance, allowing two runs and five hits in six innings pitched.
Lewis junior left fielder
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) registered the only RBI for the Flyers with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
