Kirksville, Mo. - The Lewis University softball team earned two come-from-behind victories to pick up the 3-2 (8 inn.), 6-5 (9 inn.) extra-inning Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Truman State at Truman Softball Park on Sunday (March 19).
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 14-7 overall and 3-1 in GLVC action, while the Bulldogs fall to 19-11 on the campaign and 2-2 in conference play.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (March 23), as the Flyers welcome Saint Xavier to the Lewis Softball Field for a 2 PM non-conference doubleheader.
GAME ONE
Lewis 3, Truman State 2 (8 inn.)
WP - Sanders (9-0); LP - Hajduk (1-3)
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning, Lewis scored three unanswered runs culminating with a go-ahead single by sophomore pitcher
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) in the eighth to secure the come-from-behind win over the Bulldogs.
Sanders (9-0) earned the complete-game victory in the circle for the Flyers, as she allowed two runs and eight hits, while striking out seven batters. The Crestwood, Ill., native was 2-for-4 with a RBI at the plate.
Lewis junior left fielder
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) went 2-for-4, including the game-tying RBI triple in the seventh inning. Lewis senior center fielder
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) added a pair of base knocks for the Flyers.
GAME TWO
Lewis 6, Truman State 5 (9 inn.)
WP - Sanders (10-0); LP - Dale (9-4)
Lewis junior pinch hitter
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) connected for the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth to help the Flyers complete their comeback from a 5-4 deficit.
The Flyers tied the game in the sixth inning on a RBI single by senior shortstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Jaworski went 2-for-4 with a RBI and scored a run.
Sanders (10-0) earned the win for Lewis, tossing 7.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing nine hits and striking out three batters.
Lewis sophomore first baseman
Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) went 3-for-5 and scored a run, while Prieto and Nojiri each picked up a pair of hits and scored twice.
Flyer junior catcher
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) highlighted a four-run first inning for Lewis with a two-run double.
