Clermont, Fla. - The Lewis University softball team split in opening day action of their annual Florida trip with a 6-0 win over Urbana, while dropping a 5-2 decision to Minnesota State in the nightcap.

With the split, Lewis is now 4-3 on the campaign, while Minnesota State improves to 13-3 and Urbana is 0-3.

GM 1: Lewis 6, Urbana 0
WP - Sanders (2-0); LP - Stewart

Lewis poured on five runs in the opening frame and that was all that Flyer sophomore pitcher Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) needed.

Sanders (2-0) earned the complete-game, shutout victory for the Flyers, allowing five runs and striking out 13 batters.

Flyer senior shortstop Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead Lewis offensively, while senior center fielder Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had two RBI and scored a run.

GM 2: Minnesota St. 5, Lewis 2
WP - Ries; LP - Fossey (1-2)
HR: Kral

Minnesota State's Coley Ries was nearly flawless as she struck out 19 batters and allowed just three hits in the Maverick victory.

Lewis' only blow of the game came off of the bat of junior catcher Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), as she ripped a two-run double.

Lewis starting pitcher Paige Fossey (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) took the loss for the Flyers. Fossey (0-2) surrendered five runs and 10 hits in 5.2 innings of action.
