Evansville, Ind. - No. 6 Drury University went on an 11-4 run over the final three minutes to come from behind and earn the 67-63 victory over Lewis University and claim the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Basketball Championship at the Ford Center on Sunday (March 5).
The Panthers also won the turnover battle, as they forced 17 Lewis miscues leading to a 17-0 advantage over the Flyers in points off of turnovers. Conversely, the Panthers only had six turnovers in the victory.
With the win, Drury improves to 28-3 overall and the Flyers fall to 23-8 on the campaign.
Lewis sophomore forward
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) topped the Flyers with 17 points - on 8-for-9 shooting - including eight rebounds and three assists.
The Flyers also received 14 points from redshirt senior guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) and 10 points and six rebounds from freshman forward
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston). All three Flyers were named to the GLVC All-Tournament Team.
As a team, Lewis shot 49.1% (27-for-55) from the field and 27.3% (3-for-11) from three-point range. Drury knocked down 41.1% (23-for-56) of its shots, including 33.3% (6-for-18) of its long distance attempts.
