Lebanon, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team split its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against McKendree on Saturday (Apr. 8), as the Flyers picked up the 3-0 win in the opener, while the Bearcats stormed back for the 12-1 (5 inn.) victory in the nightcap at Bearcat Field.
With the split, Lewis is now 21-16 on the campaign and 9-7 in GLVC action, while the Bearcats move to 21-16 on the season and 8-8 in conference play.
Lewis returns home on Sunday (Apr. 9) for a 12 PM doubleheader against Illinois Springfield.
GAME ONE
Lewis 3, McKendree 0

Lewis starting pitcher
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) breezed through the McKendree line-up with the complete-game, three-hit, 3-0 shutout victory in the opener. Sanders, who faced just 24 batters, struck out five Bearcats.
Sanders also recorded the game-winning RBI for the Flyers with a RBI double to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning.
Lewis senior shortstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and junior catcher
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) both went 2-for-4 with RBI singles. Both of those RBI singles came in the seventh inning, providing insurance runs for Sanders and the Flyers.

McKendree 12, Lewis 1 (5 inn.)

McKendree jumped on the Lewis pitching staff for nine runs and nine hits in the first 1.1 innings of the ballgame, as the Bearcats rolled to the 12-1 (5 inn.) win over the Flyers.Â

Paige Fossey (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) took the loss for the Flyers, surrendering four runs and five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Jaworski provided the only offensive highlight for Lewis with a RBI double in the third inning.
