Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 11 Lewis University men's volleyball team fell to No. 2 Long Beach State 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-19) Friday (Jan. 12) in a nonconference match at Neil Carey Arena.
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin)Â paced the Flyers with 13 kills, while
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka) added nine kills.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 27 assists and six digs and
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) added six digs.
LBSUÂ hit .386 for the match (43 kills, 11 errors, 83 attempts), while Lewis hit .160 (31-18-81).
"Long Beach really controlled the ball well tonight," Lewis head men's volleyball coach
Dan Friend said. "I thought our guys battled hard and created some opportunities but we didn't capitalize on them."
After a 4-4 start to the opening set, Long Beach went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead and led by as many as seven points in the set at 17-10.
But the Flyers battled back, scoring the next five points, capped by a Yoshimoto ace, to make it 17-15.
LBSU had a 20-16 lead when the Flyers answered again with five of the next six points to tie the match at 21-21.
Lewis took a 23-22 lead after an attack error, but Long Beach scored the next two points to gain set point. From there Lewis held off a pair of set points before LBSU finished off the set.
The second set started similar to the first, as Lewis held a 4-2 lead before Long Beach went on a 6-1 run to take an 8-5 lead.
Lewis came back to tie the match 9-9 before Long Beach scored five straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Flyers got back to within one at 15-14 but LBSU finished the match on a 10-4 run.
The third set was tied 7-7 when Long Beach went on a three-point run to take a 10-7 lead. It was a 15-12 score when LBSU went on an 8-1 run to pull ahead 23-15.
LBSUÂ moves to 5-0 on the year, while the Flyers fall to 0-3.
The Flyers are back at home tomorrow night (Jan. 13) as they take on George Mason at 7 PM.
