KENOSHA, Wis. – The Lewis University men's basketball team snapped a three game skid with a 66-58 win at Wisconsin-Parkside on Monday evening.
Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) led three Flyers (8-10, 3-5) in double figures with 17 points while
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) added 14 and
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) finished with 12.
"This was a good win for us on the road against a team that just beat Bellarmine," men's basketball head coach
Scott Trost said. "They were playing with a lot of confidence and we were coming off two tough games.
"I was proud of our effort. I thought we competed, it wasn't always pretty but we got great play from Marco (Pettinato) who gave us a spark. I thought Delaney (Blaylock) hit some big shots. Certainly a good team win for us."
Lewis fell behind 7-2 to begin the game and still trailed 14-7 six minutes into the game but an 8-0 run gave the Flyers a 15-14 lead. Riley Keckeisen gave the Rangers (5-11, 3-3 GLVC) the lead back with a three but Lewis responded with another seven in a row to take its biggest lead of the half at 22-17 on a three-pointer from
Bailey Basala (Moline, Ill./North Scott (IA)).
Parkside though answered the Flyers punch with one of its own ending the half on a 14-4 run to take a 31-26 lead into the intermission.
Lewis shot only 33 percent (9-for-27) but did go 5-of-10 from the three-point line in the opening half. The Flyers were outrebounded 17-to-15 in the first half.
The two sides went back-and-forth to begin the second half before Lewis began to take control midway through the frame with a 14-2 run. That run turned a three-point deficit into a nine point advantage for the Flyers with 6:48 to play. Wilson had seven points in that game deciding run.
Lewis led by as many as 10 in the contest but the Rangers were able to cut the deficit to five with 0:40 left. The Flyers were able to close the game out at the foul line making three of four throws in the final 0:30.
Lewis shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half and was 8-for-12 from three-point line. The Flyers finished the contest shooting 44 percent (22-for-50) from the field and hit 13-of-22 attempts from beyond the arc. Lewis finished the game outrebounding the Rangers 33-30.
The Flyers return home on Thursday night to take on Rockhurst in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Neil Carey Arena. Thursday night's contest will be the Christian Brothers Bash.
