KENOSHA, Wis. – The Lewis University women's basketball team rolled to its seventh straight win on Monday with an 87-51 victory at Wisconsin-Parkside.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led the way with 24 points while
Chrissi Ekhomu (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added 17 points.
"It was a collective team effort," Ekhomu said. "We started off slow and then we picked up the energy and defensive and that's what's carried us on this winning streak."
Lewis (14-4, 7-1 GLVC) used a 16-3 run over the final 5:38 of the opening quarter to extend a three-point lead to 16 points. Ekhomu had five points in that run while Kelliher added four.
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston),
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) and
Kayla Brewer (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee School of Languages) had two points apiece.
Parkside (6-12, 2-4 GLVC) opened the quarter on an 8-0 run but the Flyers responded with a 15-6 run to extend the lead to 17 on a free throw from Kelliher with 2:12 left in the second quarter. The lead ballooned to 21 points but the Rangers scored the final five points of the half to trim the lead to 16 at halftime.
"That was our main focus in the halftime talk," Kelliher said. "We knew we didn't play our best defense and we decided to lock down in third quarter and held them to just 21 points in the second half."
Lewis shot 58 percent (18-for-31) from the floor, went 5-of-9 from three and outrebounded Parkside 28-9. Kelliher and Ekhomu had 13 points each in the opening half.
The Flyers struggled shooting the ball in the third quarter making only 6-of-19 attempts from the floor and were 1-for-8 from the three-point line but was able to extend their lead by going 9-of-9 at the foul line. Lewis outscored the Rangers 22-10 in the quarter to take a 28-point lead into the final stanza.
The Flyers got hot again in the fourth quarter making 8-of-17 shots including a pair of three's as they dominated the final stanza outscoring Parkside 19-11.
Lewis finished the game shooting 48 percent (32-for-67) from the floor, was 8-of-20 from the three-point line and shot 65 percent (15-for-23) from the charity stripe. It outrebounded the Rangers 56-to-28 and had 18 assists in the contest.
The Flyers return home on Thursday night to take on Rockhurst in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Neil Carey Arena. Thursday night's contest will be the Christian Brothers Bash.
