ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis University Flyer men's basketball team seeks its second straight win as it travels to Quincy to take on the Hawks in a 3 p.m. contest at Pepsi Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers (9-11, 4-6 GLVC) are eighth in the conference rankings heading into their final eight games.
Lewis upset 25
th ranked William Jewell 94-92 last Saturday getting 38 points and 15 rebounds from
Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay). The Flyers led for a majority of the game but the Cardinals come back and take an 89-88 lead on a jumper from Patrick Whelan with 0:36 left.
Lewis regained the lead seconds later when Delaney Blaylcok hit a pair of free throws and then after a Jewell turnover, Blaylock was fouled and made the first free throw but missed the second.
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) got the offensive rebound, was fouled and then hit both free throws giving the Flyers a 93-89 lead with 0:17 left.
The Cardinals scored seconds later on an old fashioned three-point play from Byron Harp to cut the lead to one with 0:12 left. Jewell got the ball back after a turnover and had a chance to win the game but Keith Hayes shot from 17 feet was off target and Wilson was fouled going for the loose ball. He hit 1-of-2 at the line to seal the victory.
The Flyers have three players averaging double figures in scoring led by Blaylock with 16.7 points per game. Wilson is right behind him dropping in 16.5 points per contest and leads the team with 8.8 rebounds per game.
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) is contributing 11.3 points per outing.
Lewis is fourth in the conference in three-point shooting at 42 percent and have eight players that have made at least 12 three-pointers this season led by Blaylock with 42.
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) and
Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) have hit 19 three's apiece while Pischke has drained 17 and
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) has connected 15 times.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks enter Thursday's game against Missouri S&T with a record of 6-12 overall and are 2-7 in the GLVC but have won two in a row in league play. They picked up their first conference win against McKendree last Thursday and followed that up with a 74-61 win over Missouri-St. Louis.
Demetrius Houston and Tanner Stuckman led Quincy with 17 points apiece in Saturday's win. Houston leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.4 points per game and is one of four players averaging double figures. Marcus Hinton is scoring 11.9 points per contest, Marsalis Johnson checks in at 10.1 points per outing and Ryan Briscoe is right at 10 per game.
Johnson is among the GLVC leaders in field goal percentage at 64.1 percent, while Hinton is sixth in the league in rebounding with 8.3 boards per game. Bobby Frasco is Quincy's top three-point shooter with a team-high 30 three-pointers and is shooting 34.5 percent. Briscoe, also the team leader in assists with 79, has connected 25 times and Houston has buried 23 attempts.
As a team, the Hawks have struggled shooting the basketball making only 44 percent of their field goal attempts, they're shooting only 32 percent from long range and are shooting a league-low 62 percent at the charity stripe.
