Women's basketball looks to extend pair of winning streaks

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis University Flyer women's basketball team travels to Quincy, Ill., this Saturday to take on the Quincy Hawks at 1 p.m. at Pepsi Arena. The Flyers (16-4, 9-1 GLVC) are looking to extend a pair of winning streaks and stay atop the rankings for the top seed in the GLVC Tournament.

Lewis ran its winning streak to nine with a come from behind victory against William Jewell last Saturday. The Flyers trailed by as many as eight in the opening quarter but overcame the deficit by outscoring the Cardinals 38-19 over the next two quarters to take a 13-point advantage into the final frame.

Lewis's defense forced 22 turnovers by William Jewell and had a 27-to-9 advantage in points off turnovers. Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) recorded her third straight double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Flyers. She was joined in double figures by Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) with 12 points and Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) dropped home 11 points. Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) dished out a game-high six assists.

Lewis leads the GLVC in field goal percentage (46.8 percent), three-point field goal percentage defense (26.6 percent), rebounding margin (+6.1) and assists with 16.1 per game. It ranks second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.0), is third in scoring at 73.8 points per game, third in defensive field goal percentage (36.8), third in rebounding at 39.4 per contest and third in blocked shots with 3.4 per game.

Kelliher continues to lead Division II in scoring with her 25.2 points per contest and is third in the country in field goal percentage shooting 66 percent. She also ranks third in the conference in rebounding at 8.1 per game while Green leads the GLVC in assists with 4.7 per contest.

ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks enter Thursday's game against Missouri S&T with a record of 6-12, 2-7 in league play but do have victories in three of their last seven contests. Quincy dropped both of its game last weekend though with losses to McKendree and Missouri-St. Louis after picking up a road win at Maryville last Monday.

In their loss to the Tritons on Saturday the Hawks shot only 31.7 percent from the floor and were down by 14 points in the opening quarter. Annika Webster scored 16 points in the contest and is currently averaging 16.2 points per game which leads the team and is fifth in the GLVC entering play this week.

She is the lone Hawk averaging double figures in scoring. Julia Ruzevich is at 7.6 points per game while Jessie Rabas, a 49.3 percent three-point shooter, is averaging 7.2 per contest. Alexa Low is the team's top rebounder with 5.1 per game.

Quincy is shooting a GLVC-best 36 percent from beyond the arc and ranks fifth in the conference with 7.2 three's per game. Five players have made at least 13 three-pointers led by Rabas with 36 while Webster has knocked 31 treys. Webster is shooting 36.5 percent from downtown while Hickey has connected on 35.1 percent of her attempts.
