ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The 10
th ranked Lewis University men's volleyball team ran its winning streak to four straight with a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 25-20) victory over ninth ranked Cal State Northridge on Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (4-3) hit .439 for the match and had 53 kills led by
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) with 12.
Lewis trailed 11-7 in the opening set but after a timeout went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) teamed up with
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington) for back-to-back blocks which sparked the run. The two sides then went back-and-forth but the Flyers were able to come out on top in the opener scoring six of the final nine points to win 25-21.
The Matadors (5-2) hit .381 in the second set and took advantage of seven service errors by Lewis to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-19 win. CSUN led by as many as seven points in the set but the Flyers cut the deficit to three points, however, were unable to get any closer.
Lewis dominated the third set racing out to an early five point lead and led by as many as 14 points on its way to the 25-12 victory. The Flyers hit .688 in the frame recording 11 kills against zero errors in 16 chances. Murray and
Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) had three kills each in the frame while Moses and Tyler Mitchum added two kills each.
Lewis raced out to another early lead in set four and were able to withstand a rally from the Matadors extending its lead to as many as six points after a kill from Coenen. CSUN got as close as 23-20 but a service error by Maciej Ptaszynski and an attack error by Arvis Greene gave the set to the Flyers 25-20.
Lewis hit .652 in the final set again recording zero attack errors while finishing with 15 kills in 23 chances. Coenen and Murray paced the offense with five kills each in the fourth set.
Coenen led three Flyers in double figures and was joined by Murray with 11 and Moses added 10.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) handed out 46 assists while
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) finished with 14 digs.
Lewis recorded a season-high 14.5 total blocks in the contest while the 31 digs were one off its season-high.
CSUN finished the match with an attack percentage of .206 and was led offensively by Greene with a match-high 22 kills while Dimitar Kalchev added 14 kills. Schylar Lillethorup dished out 35 assists and Greene had seven digs.
The Flyers return to the court on Saturday afternoon when they take on 15
th ranked UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena. The Gauchos lost in four sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 17-25) at seventh ranked Loyola on Thursday evening.
