QUINCY, Ill. – The Lewis University women's basketball team made 12 of its first 13 shots from the floor and didn't trail in its 83-67 win at Quincy on Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) recorded her fourth straight double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds. She led five Flyers (17-4, 10-1 GLVC) in double figures.
Lewis opened the game making seven of its first eight shots in racing out to a 15-2 lead.
Kayla Brewer (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee School of Languages),
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) and
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) combined to score 12 of those points. That lead grew to 22-6 just passed the halfway point of the opening quarter after a layup by Kelliher.
The Hawks (7-13, 3-8 GLVC) finished the quarter on a 13-6 run cutting the Flyer lead to 28-19 by the end of the quarter.
Lewis extended its lead to 12 points on the first possession of the second quarter on an old-fashioned three-point play from Kelliher but Quincy continued to hang around getting as close as seven points on a pair of free throws from Anika Webster with 1:11 to play in the half.
Kelliher sent the Flyers into the locker room with a 44-35 lead hitting a jumper with 0:55 remaining.
Lewis finished the first half shooting 54.3 percent (19-for-35) from the floor, was 0-of-5 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul line. The Flyers dominated in the paint outscoring the Hawks 32-10. Kelliher scored 11 points in the first half – nine in the second quarter – to lead Lewis. Hinders added nine while Brewer finished with eight.
Quincy shot 47 percent (15-for-32) from the field, was 2-of-6 from beyond the arc and also shot 75 percent at the charity stripe. Alexa Low led all scorers with 12 points while Julia Ruzevich contributed eight points.
The Flyers pushed the lead back to double digits 1:12 into the third quarter but the Hawks countered with five straight points to cut the lead to 46-40 three minutes later. Lewis kept extending the back out but Quincy continued to have an answer and was able to trim the halftime deficit to eight points heading into the fourth quarter.
The Flyers were able to gain some separation in the final stanza outscoring the Hawks 24-16 with 15 of those points coming at the foul line. Neither team shot the ball well in the frame as Lewis shot only 33 percent while Quincy shot 25 percent from the field.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 44 percent (27-for-61) from the field, was just 1-of-11 from three but shot 78 percent (28-for-36) at the foul line. After being held to just two points in the opening quarter, Kelliher scored 26 of her game-high 28 points over the final three quarters. Green added 14, Brewer finished with 12, Hinders dropped in 11 while Lockett contributed 10. Lewis finished with a 39-to-33 advantage on the glass and was plus 20 on points in the paint.
Quincy finished the game shooting 40 percent (26-for-65) from the field, was 5-of-19 from downtown and shot 83 percent at the foul line. Low led the Hawks with 16 points – four in the second half – while Ruzevich added 14 and Webster finished with 13.
The Flyers are back at home this Thursday taking on Missouri-St. Louis at 5:30 p.m. Thursday night's contest will be the fidget spinner giveaway.
