UMSL Rallies Past Lewis Women's Basketball, 66-63

Flyers' win streak ends at 10 games

Romeoville, Ill. - A late run helped Missouri-St. Louis snap the Lewis University women's basketball team's 10-game winning streak, 66-63 Thursday (Feb. 1) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Neil Carey Arena.

It was the Flyers' first home loss of the year, moving them to 8-1 on the season at Neil Carey. They are 17-5 overall, 10-2 in the GLVC. UMSL moves to 13-5 overall, 7-4 in GLVC.

Lewis jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and held a 17-6 advantage after one quarter.

A three-pointer by Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) gave the Flyers a 28-16 lead with 4:48 remaining in the half, but UMSL ended the half on a 12-4 run to make it a 32-28 Flyer advantage at the half.

The Flyers went on a 16-3 third quarter run to open up a 54-37 lead with 1:28 left in the quarter.

A Kelliher layup at the 7:58 mark opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, giving the Flyers a 60-42 lead when the Tritons scored nine straight points to make it a 60-51 game.

Chrissi Ekhomu (Bolingbrook, Ill., Joliet Catholic) regained Lewis' double digit lead on a layup with 2:59 left in the game, but UMSL came back with 10 straight points to cut the lead to one point at 62-61 with 28 seconds left.

After a Kelliher free throw, UMSL tied the game with 18 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Kaitlynn Henning. The Flyers turned the ball over on their ensuing possession and Henning hit a three-pointer with less than five seconds left to give UMSL their first lead of the game and cap a 24-3 run over the final 7:58.

A last second three-pointer from Lewis was off the mark.

Kelliher scored 25 points for Lewis on 11-of-17 shooting (64.7%) and pulled in seven rebounds to go along with three steals. Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) added 11 points, while Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) had 10 points and four assists.

Ekhomu had eight points on 4-for-4 shooting.

The Flyers are back in action Saturday (Feb. 3) when they welcome McKendree to Neil Carey Arena for a 1 PM tip.
