Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team picked up its 11th win in 12 games Saturday (Feb. 3) with a 73-61 win over McKendree in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Neil Carey Arena.
After falling behind 3-0, the Flyers scored 10 straight points behind a pair of three-pointers from
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and never trailed again in the game.
Leading 20-16 with 7:22 left in the first half, the Flyers put together a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the half at 29-16. They led 38-30 at the half.
The Bearcats came out strong to open the second half, scoring the first six points of the third quarter to pull within a basket at 38-36.
But Lewis answered right back with a 13-2 run to take a 51-38 lead on Hinders' fourth three-pointer with 3:21 left in the third. The Flyers maintained their 13-point lead at the end of the period, leading 57-44.
Lewis kept its double digit lead the remainder of the game and built as big as an 18-point lead, 66-48, with 5:48 left in the game.
Hinders finished with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including going 4-for-6 beyond the arc.
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added a career-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) had 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.
For the game the Flyers shot 27-for-58 (46.6%) from the floor, while the Bearcats shot 22-for-50 (44%). Lewis had 14 steals in the contest and forced 27 McKendree turnovers.
The win moves the Flyers to 18-5 overall, 11-2 in the GLVC, while the Bearcats fall to 9-10 overall, 5-7 in GLVC.
Next up for Lewis is a trip to St. Louis to take on Maryville at 5:30 PM.
