ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) recorded career-highs in points (24) and assists (10) to lead Lewis to a 75-66 win at Maryville on Thursday evening. The Flyers (19-5, 12-2 GLVC) trailed 61-58 with 5:56 to play in the contest but finished the game on a 17-5 run to hold off the Saints (7-13, 4-10 GLVC).
Lewis started the game making its first nine shots but were unable to gain any separation as Maryville made nine of its first 11 shots including a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game at 20 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) led the Flyers with six points each in the stanza while
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) dropped in four.
Mary Barton and Kayla Steward led Maryville with seven points each in the opening quarter.
Barton put the Saints back in front with a three-pointer to begin the second quarter but Lewis rattled off six in a row to regain the lead on a layup from
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 5:53 left in the second quarter. Maryville responded to the Flyers run with seven straight points to take its biggest lead of the game at 30-26 on a jumper from Steward. Lewis tied the game at 30 after a pair of free throws from Lockett but the Saints scored five of the final seven points of the half to head into the locker room with a 35-32 lead.
After shooting 82 percent in the opening quarter the Flyers made only 5-of-11 shots in the second quarter and was 0-of-4 from beyond the arc. Lewis turned the ball over 12 times in the opening half resulting in 18 points for the Saints.
Maryville finished the opening half shooting 47 percent (15-for-32) from the floor, was 4-of-8 from three and hit its only free throw. Steward and Barton paced the Saints with 11 and 10 points respectively in the first 20 minutes.
The Flyers opened the third quarter on a 16-2 run turning the halftime deficit into an 11 point lead with 4:18 left in the third quarter. Maryville missed nine of its first 10 shots in the third quarter but heated up in the final four minutes making their last six shots and cut the deficit to 56-52 on a three-pointer from Steward right before the buzzer.
The Saints kept the pressure on at the start of the fourth quarter scoring nine of the first 11 points and regained the lead on a three by Barton with 5:56 to go in the contest. Lockett answered on the ensuing possession with a three from the left wing to tie the game sparking an 8-0 run to give Lewis a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Maryville trimmed the lead to 66-63 after Amanda Ponce got a friendly bounce off the rim but the Flyers outscored the Saints 9-2 over the final three minutes to pull away for the win.
Lewis finished the game shooting 59.2 percent (29-for-49) from the field, was 6-of-14 from three and shot 85 percent (11-for-13) at the foul line. Joining Lockett in double figures was Kelliher with 23 points and 10 rebounds while
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) added 10 points off the bench. The Flyers finished with a 32-to-22 advantage on the glass.
Maryville shot 46 percent (27-for-59) from the floor, was 9-of-18 from three and made all three of their attempts at the foul line. Steward led three Saints in double figures with 20 points while Barton added 13 and Brooklyn Chaffin added 11 off the bench.
Lewis is back at home on Saturday taking on Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
