INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 19 Lewis women's volleyball team swept past Hillsdale for its second sweep of the day on Friday at the Midwest Region Crossover at The Academy Volleyball Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) led three Flyers (16-5) in double figures with 13 kills while
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added 12 and
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) finished with 10 kills and 12 digs.
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) also had a double-double with 38 assists and 14 digs while
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had a match-high 23 digs.
Lewis hit .277 for the match recording 46 kills against only 10 errors in 130 chances and had nine service aces in the contest go along with six total blocks.
The opening set was tightly contested featuring 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Flyers held a 10-8 advantage after a kill from Hyland but Hillsdale (14-5) responded with five straight points to take its largest lead of the set at 13-10 on a kill from Paige VanderWall.
Lewis responded with a 7-2 run to regain the lead on a kill from Wilhelm, who had a pair of kills in the run, while Hyland, Preuss and
Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) had one each. The Chargers fought back to even things at 18 but the Flyers pushed back ahead scoring five of the next seven points to grab a 23-20 advantage.
Hillsdale evened things at 23 on a kill from Allyssa Van Wienen but it was Lewis that got to set point first with a kill from Hyland. The Chargers came right back though with a kill from VanderWall to even things at 24. A service error from VanderWall gave the Flyers another set point and they'd go onto win the opener 26-24 on a kill from
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg).
Lewis led by as many as six points in the middle stanza only to see Hillsdale climb back to within one at 19-18 on a kill from Hannah Gates. That would be the closest it got though as the Flyers scored six of the final eight points of the set to win 25-20 and take the commanding 2-0 lead.
Lewis got off to a slow start in set three falling behind 7-1 and still trailed midway through the frame at 16-10. After a timeout, the Flyers responded with a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the set at 20-18 after a bad set. It was the defense lifting them recording three blocks and forcing the Chargers into another error.
Lewis clung to a 21-20 lead before seizing momentum with three straight points. Hyland and Preuss each had big kills and Becker had a service ace to set up match point. Hillsdale fought off the first set point with a kill from VanderWall but the Flyers wouldn't allow it to go any further as Hyland knocked home a kill to end the match.
Lewis concludes play in the Crossover on Saturday afternoon taking on Davenport at 12 p.m. (CDT).
