ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 defeat at William Jewell on Sunday afternoon.
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) and
Devon Amoo-Mensah (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored for the Flyers (3-8-3, 2-7-1 GLVC).
Ochoa opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute for his team leading fourth goal of the season.
The Cardinals (5-9, 2-8 GLVC) scored the equalizer in the 20th minute on shot from 30 yards out from Teddy Gifford.
Lewis had three chances in the span of 10 minutes to regain the lead but Jewell's Quinn Ruggeri made three saves to keep the game tied.
The Cardinals broke the tie with a goal in the 37th minute when Gifford scored his second of the half off an assist from Blake Lines.
The Flyers held a 16-13 advantage in shots but William Jewell had five shots on goal compared to four for Lewis.
The Cardinals got an insurance goal in the 68th minute when Noah Espinosa scored his third of the season off an assist from Cody Benedict.
Amoo-Mensah brought the Flyers back to within one scoring off a corner kick from
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic). It was Ammo-Mensah's fourth goal of the season tying him with Ochoa for the team lead.
Lewis had its chances for the equalizer in the final 12 minutes taking nine shots and put two of those on goal but couldn't get it past Ruggeri.
The Flyers doubled up William Jewell in shots 34-to-17 and had the edge in shots on goal 9-to-6 and in corner kicks 8-to-5.
Lewis is back at home on Friday hosting Missouri S&T at 5 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
