ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis men's soccer team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Missouri S&T on Friday night at Lewis Stadium.
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) scored twice in the first 16 minutes of the game while
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) and
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) added insurance goals in the second half.
The Flyers (4-8-3, 3-7-1 GLVC) scored first for the third straight game with a goal in the sixth minute. Malinowski scored off a corner kick from Horstman for his fourth goal of the season. Malinowski struck again in the 16th minute when he intercepted a pass and scored for his team leading fifth of the season.
The Miners (3-11, 3-8 GLVC) cut the Flyer lead in half with a goal in the 39th minute. Mark Poindexter took a shot that deflected off a defender and Unnar Ulfarsson knocked home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season.
Lewis finished the first with an 8-5 advantage in shots and 5-3 in shots on goal.
The Flyers extended their lead to 3-1 10 minutes into the second half. Malinowski slipped a pass through to Ochoa who chipped it over the keeper for his fifth goal of the season. Lewis wasn't done adding a goal in the 67th minute. S&T committed a foul in the box and the Flyers were awarded a penalty kick. Horstman converted the kick for his second goal of the season.
The Miners cut the lead in half with a goal in the 89th when Cade Johnstone scored on a low shot that beat
Sean Phetchanpheng (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East) from 18 yards out off an assist from Ulfarsson.
Lewis finished the contest with a 17-12 advantage in shots and 11-8 in shots on goal. Each team was whistled for nine fouls.
The Flyers are back at home on Sunday hosting Maryville at 12 p.m. The team will honor their seniors with a pregame ceremony.
