ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The 15th ranked Lewis women's volleyball team swept Wisconsin-Parkside (25-12, 25-12, 25-14) in a non-conference match at Neil Carey Arena on Tuesday night. The win snapped the Flyers (13-4) two-match skid.
Lewis dominated the match hitting .387 and recorded 51 kills against only five errors in the contest.
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished with a match-high 12 kills while
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added 11 kills and
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) added 10 kills.
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) finished the match with 35 assists while
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had a match-high 22 digs.
The Flyers used a 13-2 run to break a 7-all tie in the opening set and take command on their way to a 25-12 victory. Lewis hit .412 in the frame with Preuss registering five kills while Hyland added four. Wilhelm,
Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had two kills apiece.
Preuss also had eight digs in the opening set and the Flyer defense recorded three total blocks in the frame.
Lewis raced out to a 7-1 lead in the middle frame and never allowed its lead to dip below three points. After the Rangers (4-14) cut the lead to 11-8 on a kill from Lexie Callaway the Flyers responded with an 8-1 run to build a 10-point advantage. Wilhelm had three kills in that set deciding run.
The final set was tied at three early when Lewis took control with an 8-1 run. Hyland and Becker combined for seven kills in that run. Parkside cut the deficit to six but the Flyers responded with a 9-3 run to extend the lead to 21-9 when
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) and
Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) teamed up for a block.
The Rangers cut the lead to 22-13 on a service error but Lewis closed out the match scoring three of the final four points.
The Lewis defense held Parkside to a .092 hitting percentage, recorded eight total blocks and had 64 digs.
The Flyers resume GLVC play on Friday traveling to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 7 p.m.
