ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Karlie Cummins (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) goal in the 19th minute lifted the Lewis women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Missouri S&T on Friday evening at Lewis Stadium. The win moves the Flyers (9-4-2, 8-3 GLVC) into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.
Lewis came out firing taking five shots in the first 18 minutes of the contest. The Flyers scored on their sixth one as Cummins headed home a corner kick from
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) for her third goal of the season.
Lewis had a couple of chances later in the half to extend their lead but were unable to convert.
The Flyers held an 8-2 advantage in shots and 3-0 in shots on goal.
The Miners (4-9-1, 3-7-1 GLVC) outshot Lewis 7-3 in the second half and had three good chances to even the score but
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made three big saves to post her second shutout of the season. S&T's best chance came in the final minute when Kayla Foster got free and had an open goal to shoot at but kicked it right to Clark.
Lewis finished the game with an 11-9 edge in shots but each side had four shots on goal.
The Flyers are back at home on Sunday hosting Maryville at 2:30 p.m.
