Story Links

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Southern Indiana's Courtney Spicer scored with 0:03 left in the second overtime to hand the Lewis women's soccer team a 2-1 defeat in the home finale on Wednesday afternoon. The Flyers outshot the Screaming Eagles (11-5-2, 9-3-1 GLVC) 11-6 in the contest.

Lewis took the early lead scoring in the ninth minute. Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) scored her first goal of the season volleying a shot over the keeper from the top of the box.

Southern Indiana evened the score in the 31st minute after a foul on the Flyers. Madelyne Juenger served the free kick into the box and found Loryn Willis who headed it in for the goal.

Sidney Riemer (Grafton, OH/Midview) had a chance to give Lewis the lead back late in the first half but her shot was saved by Emily Hopkins.

The Flyers held a 3-2 edge in shots at the half but each team had two shots on goal.
Lewis held the ball in the Screaming Eagle for a majority of the second half and had a couple of great chances to retake the lead. Kianna Clark (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) had a chance less than a minute into the frame that was saved and Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) had a chance in the final 10 minutes that was also saved.

Each side had a chance for the game-winner in the first overtime period. Taylor McCormick missed a shot high in the 99th minute and Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) had her shot saved by Hopkins in the closing seconds of the frame.

The Flyers had a couple of chances early in the second overtime period as Levins and Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) each had shots saved by Hopkins.

Parnello had a chance with less than two minutes to play but missed her shot wide.

USI scored the game-winner off a corner kick in the final seconds. Madison Cady sent the kick to the back post where Spicer headed it back towards the center of the box. In the scramble to clear it out the ball fell to Willis who found Spicer in front of the net for the goal.

Lewis finishes the regular season with a record of 9-6-2, 8-5 GLVC and will play in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Opponent and game time for Sunday will be announced on Thursday.
