BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois State used a 16-2 run over a six minute stretch in the second half to pick up an 80-58 over the Lewis University men's basketball team in the Flyers' exhibition opener at Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena on Tuesday (Oct. 30).
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) led the Flyers with 15 points, including three three-pointers while
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) and
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) added 10 and eight points respectively.
Lewis opened the game on a 9-4 run but the Redbirds countered with a 10-3 run to take a 14-12 lead with 14:45 left in the opening half.
The Flyers continued to hang around and retook the lead at 35-34 on a layup from Oliver with less than five minutes to play in the opening half.
Illinois State ended the first half scoring 12 of the final 14 points to take a 46-37 lead into the locker room.
The Redbirds scored the first points of the second half but Lewis responded with an 11-5 run to cut the lead to 53-48 on a tipin by Oliver 5:30 into the period.
Illinois State countered with a 16-2 run over the next six minutes to build a 69-50 lead. Josh Jefferson, Rey Idowu and Phil Fayne combined to score 14 of the 16 points during that run.
Reinhart hit a three to end the run but the Redbirds outscored the Flyers 21-5 the rest of the way to take the victory.
As a team, Lewis shot 34 percent (22-for-64) from the field and 21 percent (6-for-28) from the three-point line. The Flyers committed 13 turnovers which led to 16 points for Illinois State. The Redbirds also held a 43-to-33 advantage on the boards.
Fayne led three ISU players in double figures with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jefferson added 15 more off the bench while Zach Copeland chipped in with 11.
The Redbirds shot 49 percent (27-for-55) from the floor and made 10 three-pointers in the contest.
Lewis opens the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 10), as the Flyers meet Michigan Tech for a 12 p.m. CT tip at Northern Michigan.
