MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Lewis men's basketball team opened its 2018-19 season with a 74-53 win over Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon in Marquette, Mich.
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) led the Flyers (1-0) with 21 points while
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin) added 15 points and added five assists.
Lewis shot 58 percent (15-for-26) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and held the Huskies to just 23 percent shooting (7-of-31) to take a 38-24 lead into the break.
The Flyers dominated inside outscoring the Huskies (0-1) 20-4 in the paint and also turned nine Tech turnovers into 13 points.
McCullum scored nine of his 15 points in the first 20 minutes and also had seven rebounds and three assists.
Lewis broke an 8-8 tie with an 11-2 run and never looked back as they extended its lead to as many as 17 points in the frame before the Huskies Isaac Appleby hit a three-pointer with 0:29 left in the half to cut the Flyer lead to 14 points.
Lewis extend its lead to 22 points within the first five minutes of the second stanza with a 16-8 run. Blaylock scored seven straight points during the run while
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) chipped in with five points and McCullum and
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) scored two apiece.
Tech cut the lead to 17 points with 12:31 to go but the Flyers never allowed them to get closer than that.
Lewis finished the game shooting 54 percent (31-for-57) from the floor, went 7-of-12 from three and were 5-of-10 at the foul line. The Flyers outrebounded the Huskies 38-to-27 and turned 17 Tech turnovers into 36 points.
Lewis' defense held Michigan Tech to only 31 percent (16-for-52) shooting in the contest, 7-for-20 from three but the Huskies did shoot 82 percent at the foul line.
Lewis is back in action on Sunday afternoon taking on Northern Michigan at 2 p.m. (CST).
