Story Links

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) scored a goal in each half to give the Lewis men's soccer team a 2-0 win at Bellarmine on Friday evening. The win is the second in a row for the Flyers (3-5-3, 2-4-1 GLVC).

Lewis broke the scoreless tie in the 29th minute. John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) sent a ball ahead to Timm Adler (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) and Adler crossed it into the middle of the box to Malinowski who slid it past the keeper for his second goal of the season.

The Knights (4-5-1, 3-3-1 GLVC) had their chances in the opening half taking 10 shots and put four of those on goal but Edgar Avila (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) came up big stopping all four shots to keep them off the board.

Avila made a pair of big saves early in the second half to preserve the lead. Bellarmine had chances in the 57th and 60th minutes. Donald Aviles hit the crossbar with his attempt in the 57th minute and Collin Rose had his shot saved by Avila in the 60th minute.

Malinowski gave the Flyers an insurance goal when he scored from 15 yards out in the 68th minute. Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) played the ball ahead to Malinowski who got behind the Knight defense and beat the keeper 1-one-1 for his third of the season.

The Knights applied heavy pressure in the final 20 minutes trying to get on the board taking eight shots including four on goal but Avila stopped each one to earn his fourth shutout of the season.

Bellarmine outshot Lewis 23-15 in the contest and 11-4 in shots on goal. Avila made a season-high 11 saves in the victory.

The Flyers are back at home on Sunday taking on Drury at 12 p.m. at Lewis Stadium. Sunday's contest will be Alumni Day for the men's program.
