Story Links

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kailey Parnello's (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) goal with 1:10 left in the second overtime lifted the Lewis women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Bellarmine on Friday afternoon. The win was the fourth in a row for Lewis and moved them into a tie for second with Truman State in the GLVC standings.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes the Flyers (6-3-2, 5-2 GLVC) struck first scoring 15 minutes into the second half. Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) sent a goal kick towards midfield that was flicked onto Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South). She sent a pass forward to Parnello who beat the defense and shot one from the left side of the penalty area across the box inside the right post for her sixth goal of the season.

Bellarmine (6-4-1, 4-2-1 GLVC) had a chance to tie the game in the 70th minute but Clark stopped a shot from Isabella Zamborini. The Knights had another chance in the 78th minute but Erika Joldrichsen's shot missed wide left.

Bellarmine scored the tying goal in the 83rd minute. Samantha Ferry dribbled down the end line and sent a cross over Clark's hands to Zamborini who was wide open on the back post and headed it in for her second goal of the season.

The Knights had most of the possession in the first overtime period recording five shots in the period. Bellarmine's best chance came in the 96th when Audrey Van Der Elst hit the crossbar on a shot from 22 yards out.

The Knights had a chance to win the game in the 105th minute but Clark made a six save on an attempt by Olivia Taylor.

Parnello had a chance about 0:30 later but Elyssa Francis made the save. Parnello's second chance in double overtime didn't miss though.  Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) won a ball near midfield and passed it to Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) who sent it down the right sideline to Parnello.

Parnello fired a shot from the right wing that beat Francis inside the left post for her third game-winning goal of the season.

The Flyers were outshot in the contest 19-5 and 7-3 in shots on goal. Clark stopped six of the seven shots she faced. Parnello recorded all five shots for the Flyers putting three on goal.

Lewis is back at home on Sunday taking on Drury at 2:30 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
