Late Goal Lifts Flyers To Fifth Straight Win

Story Links

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Kailey Parnello's (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) goal with 3:17 left in regulation gave the Lewis women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Drury on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The win is the fifth straight for the Flyers (7-3-2, 6-2 GLVC).

The Panthers (0-11-1, 0-8 GLVC) struck first with a goal 10 minutes into the contest. Lewis tried to clear the ball out but it fell to Uxoa Bertiz who volleyed in a shot for her first goal of the season.

The Flyers had plenty of chances for the equalizer firing seven shots including three on goal in the next 10 minutes.
Lewis broke through in the 23rd minute to tie the game. Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) sent a corner kick into the box that was deflected by Parnello to Karly Soy (Eldridge, IA/North Scott Senior) who headed it in for her third goal of the season.

The Flyers had another chance nearly five minutes later but Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) missed her shot high.

Drury had three chances to regain the lead but Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) made a pair of saves and Gabbe Millot missed a shot wide.

Lewis had a 9-6 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes but the Panthers had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Flyers had seven corner kicks in the half.

Lewis dominated play in the second half outshooting Drury 9-0 and had six shots on goal but were unable to score until Parnello found the back of the net in the 87th minute. The Flyers won a throw in deep in Drury's end. Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) tossed it into Parnello who went left, turned, and went back right and fired a left footed shot into the upper right corner for her eighth goal of the season and third on the weekend. It was also her fourth game-winner on the year.

Lewis outshot the Panthers 18-6 for the contest, 10-6 in shots on goal and had 14 corner kicks to none for Drury. Parnello recorded 10 of the Flyers 18 shots and put six of those on goal.

Lewis returns to action on Friday as it travels to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst at 5 p.m.
