ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis women's basketball team rolled to a 102-58 win over Benedictine in an exhibition contest on Tuesday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led three Flyers in double figures with 26 points while
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added 13 and
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) chipped in with 11 off the bench.
Lewis (1-1) opened the game on an 11-2 run but the Eagles (1-0) countered with a 13-2 run of its own to take a 15-13 lead with 4:40 left in the opening quarter on a layup from Claire Kibler. Kelliher tied the game with a pair of free throws before Benedictine took its final lead of the contest on basket from Alex Fanning.
The Flyers regained the lead thanks to a 7-0 run behind six points from Kelliher. The Eagles though scored the final four points of the period to cut the lead to 22-21 at the quarter break.
Lewis dominated the second quarter going on a 26-3 run before Brittany Pitzer hit a jumper in the closing seconds of the quarter to take a 48-26 lead into the break. The Flyers shot 63 percent (10-for-16) in the frame, were 3-of-5 from downtown and shot 75 percent at the foul line. Kelliher and
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) teamed up to score 14 of the team's points in the stanza.
Lewis turned 16 Eagle turnovers into 22 points and outscored them 22-8 in the paint.
The Flyers kept their momentum going in the third quarter outscoring Benedictine 28-18 while shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from the floor including 5-of-8 from the three-point line. Gardner scored eight of her points in the quarter while Green added six.
Lewis built its largest lead of the game on a layup by
Allison Utterback (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) in the final seconds as it ended the game on a 9-0 run.
All thirteen Flyers scored in the contest as they shot 51 percent (37-for-72) from the field, 11-of-21 (52 percent) from three and 77 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Eagles 38-28 in the contest and had 26 assists on 37 made field goals. Lewis forced 27 turnovers in the game which led to 38 points.
D'Asia Williams led Benedictine with 14 points in the contest while Allison Michalski added nine and Pitzer finished with eight off the bench.
The Flyers are back in action on Friday hosting Grand Valley State in their home opener beginning at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
