ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis women's basketball team saw its 14-point lead disappear in the final quarter but scored the final eight points of the game to defeat Grand Valley 74-66 on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.

Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led three Flyers (2-1) in double figures with 30 points while Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 18 and Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) chipped in with 15.

Lewis grabbed its largest lead of the contest at 66-52 on a layup by Green with 6:06 to play. The Lakers began to make their run scoring 14 straight points and held the Flyers scoreless for nearly five minutes.

Megan Belke scored seven points in that run for Grand Valley while Maddie Dailey added four.

The Lakers tied the game with less than two minutes to play hitting three-of-four at the foul line. Green was called for a foul going after a rebound on the offensive end and then picked up a technical foul when she slammed the ball to the court in frustration.

Belke hit the two technical free throws to cut the lead to 66-65 and then Victoria Hedemark hit 1-of-2 to even the score at 66.

Green answered on the ensuing possession hitting a driving layup to the bucket and then after a stop Hinders hit a layup to put Lewis ahead 70-66 with less than a minute to play. Cassidy Boesch missed a layup on the other end and Green came away with the rebound.

Kelliher made it a six-point game with 0:18 to play hitting a layup and then after another stop Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) was fouled and hit two free throws to ice the contest.

Grand Valley led by as many as seven in the opening quarter thanks to the shooting of Jenn DeBoer, who scored nine of her 14 points in the first 10 minutes. The Flyers responded with a 10-2 run to tie the score at 17 on a jumper by Green but DeBoer hit a jumper in the final minute of the quarter to give the Lakers a two-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Lewis used an 11-2 run midway through the second quarter to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Hinders had five points in that run while Green added four and Kelliher finished with two. The Lakers ended the first half on a 10-5 run to cut the Flyer lead to 38-34 at the half.

Lewis opened the third quarter on a 10-4 run to extend its halftime lead to double digits on a layup from Hinders near the midway mark of the period. Grand Valley cut the lead to five on several occasions but the Flyers didn't allow them to get any closer as they stretched their lead back to 10 before a pair of free throws by Boensch to cut the lead to 56-48 by the end of the quarter.

Lewis finished the game shooting 55 percent from the field (30-for-55) and was 18-of-24 in the second half. It was 8-for-9 at the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes after going 2-of-6 in the first half. The Flyers were 4-of-17 from three but outrebounded the Lakers 35-to-26 and outscored them 42-to-24 in the paint.

Grand Valley ended the contest shooting 37 percent (21-for-57) from the field, was 6-of-24 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. Dailey led three Lakers in double figures with 17 points while DeBoer finished with 14 and Boensch added 12.

Lewis is back at home on Sunday hosting Northwood at 1 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
