ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The 25th ranked Lewis women's basketball team defeated Northwood 68-44 for its third straight win at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led the Flyers (3-1) with 24 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds while
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Lewis shot 50 percent from the floor (24-for-48), was 4-of-13 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Timberwolves (1-3) 42-to-28 in the contest.
The Flyers scored the first four points of the contest but Northwood came right back with five in a row. Lewis answered that run with a 7-3 one of its own to grab an 11-8 lead. Kelliher scored four points in the run to surpass her former teammate,
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic), to become the school's all-time leading scorer.
The Timberwolves tied the game at 11 after Adrianna Stolicker hit her third three of the opening quarter. The Flyers regained the lead with a 5-0 run behind another four points from Kelliher and a free throw by
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South).
Northwood cut the Lewis lead to 16-14 by the end of the quarter when Taylor Ellie hit a three-pointer in transition.
Lewis extended its lead to six less than three minutes into the second quarter before the Timberwolves came back to even things at 20 with six straight points. The Flyers regained the lead for good with 11 straight points with Hinders scoring seven straight while Kelliher and
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added two each.
The Timberwolves ended the second quarter scoring five of the final seven points to cut the Lewis lead to 33-25 at the break.
The Flyers extended their lead to double digits opening the third quarter scoring the first four points. Northwood answered back to cut the lead to 38-30 on a three-pointer from Hunter Vitala less than three minutes into the frame.
Lewis ran off eight of the next 10 points to push their lead to 46-32 with 4:08 to go in the period. The Timberwolves cut the lead to 12 after two Grace German free throws but that would be the closest they got as the Flyers ended the quarter scoring seven of the final nine points to take a 53-36 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Lewis built its biggest lead of the game at 24 points on a layup from
Alyssa Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Jones Prep) with less than two minutes to play in the contest.
Stolicker was the leading scorer for Northwood with 14 points while German and Taylor chipped in with eight each. The Timberwolves were 14-of-57 (24.6 percent) from the field, hit 25 percent of their three-point attempts and hit 9-of-12 free throws.
The Flyers return to action on Tuesday evening as they travel to Hammond, Ind., to take on Purdue Northwest at 5 p.m.
