No. 24 Lewis Women’s Basketball Rallies To Defeat Indianapolis In GLVC Opener

ROMEOVILLE – The 24th ranked Lewis women's basketball team rallied from a 16-point third quarter deficit to defeat Indianapolis 73-68 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference for both teams on Saturdy afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers (6-1, 1-0 GLVC) had all five starters reach double figures in scoring led by Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) with 20 points. Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added 15 points with six assists while Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 12 points each. Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) dropped in 10.

The Greyhounds (4-3, 0-1 GLVC) led by as many as six in the opening 10 minutes but Lewis was able to cut the deficit to 22-18 by the quarter break.

UIndy shot 73 percent (8-for-11) from the field in the second quarter and outscored the Flyers 19-13 to take a 41-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The 'Hounds extended their halftime lead to 16 points 2:24 into the third quarter scoring the first six points of the frame. Lewis responded with a 17-3 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 50-48 after a pair of free throws from Green.

Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) provided a big spark off the bench on the defensive end during that run blocking four shots and came up with some key rebounds on the defensive end.

UIndy extended its lead back to 10 by finishing the quarter on a 10-2 run behind four points from Liz Alsot and three from Mickey Sasson.

The Flyers opened the final quarter on a 14-1 run to take its first lead since early in the contest. Green hit a layup with less than four minutes to play to put Lewis ahead for good.

Claire Carlton broke the run momentarily with a layup with 3:57 to play but the Flyers ran off another five in a row to take its biggest lead of the game at 69-63 after Green hit 1-of-2 at the foul line.

The Greyhounds cut the lead to 69-66 on a three-pointer from Taylor Drury with less than a minute to play but Lewis went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final 0:35 seconds to pick up the win.

The Flyers finished the game shooting 51 percent (26-of-51) from the field, was 5-for-14 from three and shot 76 percent at the foul line. They were outrebounded 30-to-26 in the contest but turned 15 turnovers into 19 points.

UIndy finished the game shooting 47 percent (27-of-57) from the floor, was 6-of-15 from three and shot 73 percent at the foul line. Drury led four Greyhounds in double figures with 18 points.

Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 4) hosting St. Francis at 5:30 p.m.
